NIH Volunteer Program for English Proficiency

posted Feb 11, 2009 9:13 AM by Brian Haugen   [ updated May 24, 2010 6:41 PM by Rebecca Brown ]
o The NIH Volunteer Program for English Proficiency (VPEP) is seeking volunteers willing to commit one lunch-hour a week to teach basic conversational English and English literacy skills to NIH housekeeping employees.  Classes are currently held 11:30-12:30 on Mon-Thurs at the Clinical Center and in Building 31, but more classes may be added in other locations if we have additional volunteer tutors.

o New volunteer tutors will join an existing team of volunteers who can provide guidance and support. No second-language knowledge is needed and all teaching materials will be provided.

o VPEP was started in 2006 by Maria Hessie (NIAID) with only one student but quickly grew by word of mouth, attracting employees from different nationalities who sought to improve themselves through their English skills. Today, 12 volunteers in addition to Maria, teach approximately 41 students. Ms. Hessie has been recognized with the prestigious NIH Director's Award for her work with VPEP.

o The quick increase in class size and varied skill levels has required the group to expand and seek additional classroom locations. Your help as a volunteer with VPEP will allow more students to take advantage of this wonderful program and enable them to make greater contributions to their workplace, families, and communities. If interested, please contact Maria Hessie (Maria.Hessie@nih.gov) for more information.
